        Introduction

The development of 5G, IoT, AI and other technologies is continuously promoting the development of industrial design in the direction of intelligence, servitization and sustainability. In this context, many research results have been achieved in the following research areas: design engineering, design theory and method, participatory design, user experience design, and design innovation, etc. In order to exchange current research from academic researchers in universities and research institutes and technical personnel in enterprises, encourage research collaborations among them, it is urgent to build an interdisciplinary, high-quality international academic exchange platform.

The Third International Conference on Smart Product Through-Life Design (SPTLD) is hosted by Northwestern Polytechnical University. The first and second SPTLD was successfully held in Xi’an in 2018 and in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK in 2021, respectively. The third SPTLD, as as one of the important activities of the Silk Road (Xi'an) International Innovation Design Festival, will be held again in Xi'an, China on September 23-24, 2023. To actively respond to the "Belt and Road" initiative, we sincerely invite well-known experts, scholars and scientists in the field of design at home and abroad to gather in Xi'an to discuss new problems, new technologies, new methods, new trends in the field of smart product life cycle design, design practice and education, paths of constructing new design discipline, and design talent training models in an interdisciplinary context, focusing on the national smart manufacturing strategy, and aiming at the practical needs of social and economical development for product intelligence and product innovation design. The conference will effectively promote the improvement of design innovation capabilities and the level of design discipline construction.
